2014 Alder Springs Chardonnay
The Alder Springs vineyard is situated at the very top of Mendocino County at an elevation between 1,900’ and 2,600’. I have the good fortune to work with many outstanding vineyards in the North Coast, and this may be the finest when you consider the vineyard management, the site and the varietals grown. Just nine miles from the ocean, this vineyard has more moderate temperatures, but plenty of sunshine. The result is grapes which are fully ripe at a lower brix. That translates to greater acidity, better structure, and lower alcohol. I barrel-ferment the Alder Springs Chard and use approximately 40% new French oak. This contributes the richness needed to balance the higher acids, especially since no malolactic fermentation was performed (this lowers the acidity). You’ll find aromas and flavors of lemon curd, pineapple, coriander, along with a kiss of new oak. A leesy, mouth-coating creaminess with bright acidity contribute to a long finish. The Alder Chards age extremely well, so drink a couple now and stash away a few for 5+ years.
